Every Day is Readers' Day: Embracing the Joy of Books
At Byblios, we believe that Readers' Day is every day, but having a dedicated moment to celebrate the joy of reading reminds us of its transformative power. After all, there is a book for everyone—a story, a world, or a voice that resonates uniquely with each of us.
In Portugal, fostering a culture of reading has been a national priority for decades. Initiatives like the National Program for the Promotion of Reading (PNPL), launched in 1997, and the National Reading Plan (PNL), which followed ten years later, underscore this commitment. These programs aim to elevate literacy levels and instill the joy of reading across generations.
Libraries, particularly school libraries, have played a pivotal role in these efforts. The School Library Network, initiated in 1996, embodies the belief that "the creation and development of the pleasure of reading and the acquisition of reading habits" (Veiga et al., 1997:7) are essential to empowering individuals and building a literate society.
As we celebrate Readers' Day, let's reflect on how reading connects us, inspires us, and enriches our lives. Whether you're picking up a classic, diving into a new bestseller, or exploring an unknown genre, remember: there’s a book waiting for you, and its pages hold the potential to change your world.
Happy reading, today and every day!
